Joyce PS Celebrates Community Excellence

On February 27th, students at Joyce Public School took part in the Joyce Community Excellence Event, an all-day affair offered students at Joyce Public School a unique chance to learn from and engage with accomplished members from racialized communities. Students were given the opportunity to work with a learn from a diverse lineup of guest speakers and workshops, each highlighting personal success stories, and career paths in various fields.

Every student participated in at least four engaging workshops, including:

  • "Don't Yuck My Yum!" – A special guest chef introduced students to delicious yet lesser-known foods.

  • A talk by a trailblazing entrepreneur who has worked with major professional sports teams and co-owns North America's only all-women-run sneaker store here in Toronto, and has recently even collaborated with Nike on her own shoe design “Make Way”.

  • A hands-on culinary experience led by another guest chef, showcasing unique foods and fruits.

  • Insights from a prominent Radio/TV personality on his career path and how he now gives back to his community.

  • A dynamic “feet-on” session with Sporting FC Toronto’s Technical Director, who has coached many professional soccer players in the past.

The event successfully provided students with invaluable mentorship and inspiration. A special “Thank you!” to Joyce’s kindergarten teacher, Ms. Pereira, for leading the incredible day.
