Students develop and expand their leadership skills through involvement in clubs and councils, specialized classes, additional community involvement hours, guest speaker sessions and workshops.
- Student require an extra 60 hours of community involvement hours
- Mentor Groups by Grade meet twice a month
- Contribute to their school and/or community developing skills in communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and conflict management.
Unique Calendar for the Year
R. H. King Academy runs on an early start calendar. Each year, the school year resumes early on the Monday before Labour Day for all students. The school has a November Wellness Week during the first half of the month, similar to the March Break (the exact dates are announced annually in the Spring).
There is no school for students during the November Wellness Week break.
Unique Weekly Schedule
R.H. King Academy’s schedule includes 2 unique features: Mentor Groups and Clinic.
Mentor periods are scheduled on Wednesdays from 10:00 - 10:55 a.m. where students meet with a group of student peers and a teacher to explore ideas and build skills that will support their learning and their growth and development - including topics like Mental Health and Wellness, Equity and Social Justice, Community service, etc.
Clinic periods are an additional 50 minutes attached to period 1 - this rotates so each course has 1 clinic time per week. Clinic allows students to have time to collaborate with peers, seek extra help from teachers, and have a structured time to review, catch up, and work ahead.
Please note: Due to enrolment constraints at R. H. King Academy, a minimum of 20% of available seats will be assigned to applicants living in the school’s local catchment area.
